A tasty Lancia

Flavia does well, but Capri fails to whet appetites

-

Historics’ opening sale of the year at Brooklands went well with 77% of the 126 cars finding buyers, though as with most sales at the moment this was helped by offering a fair chunk – 22 in this case – at ‘no reserve’. Significantly though, most of the others sold within or above their estimates; buyers remain keen.

One of those overestimate performers was a lovely right-hand drive, UK market 1963 Lancia Flavia Coupé. These are hard to find in any condition, though quite a few left-hookers have been imported in recent years, and for some time have looked far too cheap compared to other 1960s Italian coupés. So this one’s £15,680 should come as no surprise – in fact it still looks cheap.

On the other hand it was a surprise to see the lesser of a pair of Ford Capri 2.8i Specials fail to sell, especially with plenty of Ford enthusiasts in attendance. The black 13,800-miler made £31,360, but the white car, fresh from a restoration after 17 years in storage, failed to find a buyer even at the £13,000 end of its estimate. That must be less than the resto costs – a real miss.
