Your Cars

-

I became fascinated by aircooled VWS in my teens, but the dream of owning one took a while to realise. A 1965 Beetle proved a steep learning curve but this one ticked all the boxes after a thorough search. Restored in 2007 by a previous owner, it wears a respray of its original Sea Blue paint and is powered by a 1300 twin-port engine. I bought it from a VW fan whose wife used it as a daily driver and have gently moulded it to my own tastes. Researching the history of the car through the DVLA and VW museum has proved fascinating – it was assembled not in Wolfsburg, but in Belgium at the Volkswagen Vorst plant in Brussels, and delivered to East Sussex – while the conversations it sparks on petrol-station forecourts make you realise just how many people’s lives have been touched by the Beetle. A pilgrimage back to Belgium, via Le Bug Show at Spa, is booked for August.
