‘It is an export car and lived in Africa until 1992’

1967 MGB GT Brian Woodhams, Cambridge

My fastback MG was built at Abingdon on September 25, 1967 so it’s about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. It is an export specification car but nothing is known of its history until December 1977 when it was registered to K Summers in Cape Province, South Africa. We bought it in June 1982 for £300 as a non-runner. It had been stolen and returned to its owner so we needed to do some work on it. It ended up being given a complete mechanical and electrical rebuild over two years before making a move to Botswana in January 1987. In July 1992 it was shipped via Durban back to the UK. We have always enjoyed it as a working car, but despite surviving African Taxis, cows, goats and roads, it was written off in the UK when a seven-ton Volvo truck savaged it from behind in 1994. We repurchased it and restored it and it was Mot’d again in 1996. Since then we have driven all-round the UK and Europe in it on various MG Car club events. 50 years young and still going strong!

?? ?? Even when it was written off, Brian refused to let his cherished MGB die.
