What’s it like to drive?

-

When the updated 1302/1303 models were introduced in 1971 the standard 1200 model was retained as a cheaper Beetle. But I don’t feel at all shortchanged. Once I’ve squeezed my 6’6’’ frame behind the enormous thin-rimmed steering wheel, everything falls neatly to hand and the driving position is surprisingly good, if a little upright. Visiblity is excellent and I’m able to place the Beetle precisely where I want it on the road. The 1192cc motor is as sweet as a nut – it is absolutely in its element when pootling from village to village, but even battling with commuter traffic on the way to work isn’t a problem. On A- and B-roads I enjoy making the most of what the little 1200 has got. Maintain the revolutions and it is willing enough. Get used to skinny tyres and then simply exploit the lightness – you can’t not have fun in this car.
