Thoughts on new penalties for speeding?

-

Another money making exercise! It would not be so bad if they put all the money into fixing the roads – and better safety measures. Mark Vinall

A tiered system does have some merits – insofar that somebody who has strayed to 75mph perhaps unintentionally on a motorway should not be punished as severely as the guy who always drives at 110mph and doesn’t fear the consequences. I would fully expect and accept a substantial penalty for driving in excess of 100mph, as I would have knowingly and quite wilfully broken the law. Adrian Holness If you don’t speed, then you’ll be fine, not fined. So a cyclist can run red lights and knock into pedestrians, but motorists go 1mph over limit and are fined! Just 1 or 2mph over isn’t worth the paperwork! Neil Johnson

One of the results of the change is that you no longer have a 10 per cent leeway (previously legal), due to any inflation in the tyre due to changing atmospheric conditions. If you are recorded over the speed limit, yet your speedometer in the car says you are at the limit, it will be deemed you and your cars fault. Tony Moxon

A limit is an upper limit not a lower one or even a minimum target. Carping on about a tolerance is like saying it’s not murder if you kill someone with one bullet - but use three bullets and it is. You can’t kill someone just a little bit – just like you can’t speed just a little bit! You speed or you don’t. Glen Jones
