Your terrifying tyre stories

-

I’ve seen classic cars advertised as on original tyres and yet with Mots. It’s madness. James Morgan

Metrics always terrify me, I’ve seen quite a few old 6-Series BMWS and XJ40S on million-year-old metrics as they are so expensive to buy new. Peter Brightwell

I parked next to a P6 at a show once that had been in a collection for most of its life. The owner said the ride was a bit bumpy at first but got better. When he wasn’t about I checked the date on his tyres. Yep, 1978. Keith Noon

It’s common to see truck tyres losing their belts on the highways here in Texas. Because of the heat, nobody should ride on tyres over six years-old. Al Abbasi

I’ve had six punctures in the low-profile tyres of my 2014 Golf GT in three years – they only have to see a pothole to blow out. Ian Hayward

In the Sixties my dad had a Ford Prefect. One day he found a large bubble on the inner wall of one tyre. He stuck some rubber over it with Evo-stik and we set off on our holidays. No ’elf and safety back then! Peter Butler I was driving a vintage 1973 Mercedes 450SE 140 miles up through the mountains and lost the tread off both my rear tyres – it slowly chunked away, leaving just the carcasses of the tyres intact! They were both still holding air, though, so I continued to drive on the carcasses for 30 miles into town. Made it all the way there and had the tyres changed the next morning. John James
