This was the year that Saab 900s un­der­went their most sig­nif­i­cant facelift, swap­ping the blunt, nose of the early cars for a slop­ing snout and in­te­grated bumpers. Were the nearby Volvo own­ers jeal­ous of this sex­ier Scan­di­na­vian model?

Blue­birds over…

… the brown cliffs of Wear­side. The Nis­san plant at Sun­der­land opened in 1986 but this Blue­bird es­tate was still made in Ja­pan (we think). The the white five-door above it is a Mazda 626, built in Hiroshima and now all but dis­ap­peared.

No joke

By 1987, Skoda jokes were in full swing, and while the Estelle’s engi­neer­ing was from an ear­lier age, it was fun to drive, char­ac­ter­ful and easy to fix. Was it any worse than certain BL pro­duce on this page?
