Rescuing a tired seal

-

QI need to replace the window seal on the rear hatchback of my Saab 900. The original has shrunk and it’s letting water into the boot. The part is no longer easily available. Can you suggest a solution? Deiniol Skillicorn, Cardiff

ATry using a nonsetting screen sealant. This can be bought cheaply online and applied using a household caulk gun. The ideal plan, if you’re feeling ambitious, is to remove the window, thoroughly clean the seal and aperture and then reassemble it with the sealant.

Apply sealant around the seal then attach it to the window glass. Run a cord around the tailgate side of the seal and place the glass over the aperture. Pull the cord to slip the lip of the seal over the lip in the tailgate. When it’s in, apply sealant between the tailgate and seal (pre-applying the sealant here will create a ruinous black mess everywhere).

If the seal has shrunk and split at its joint at the top or bottom middle, fill this with a black panel sealant/ adhesive such as Tiger Seal, which will set completely. You’ll find a feature on windscreen removal and replacement in the August 2016 issue.
