I’m thinking of turning Japanese

QI have a Range Rover P38 with a duff 4.0-litre V8 engine and an auto gearbox. I’d like to convert it to use an Isuzu 3.1 diesel and a manual ‘box. Is there a kit available for this? John Slee, rhoose

AYes and no. Conversion and Precision Engineering Ltd (07583 127355, engine-conversion.com)

make kits for a variety of replacement engines, including the Isuzu. But the kits adapt the engine to fit the chassis and existing gearbox. The firm may be able to advise on your intention to fit the gearbox, too.

We suspect it will require new gearbox mountings and an altered transfer box arrangement, not to mention installing a clutch system and positioning the manual gearchange inside the cabin. If the automatic gearbox is still serviceable, it might be easiest to live with it.
