SAGGING HEADLINING REPAIR

-

QThe headlining of our Rover 25 has collapsed with age at one rear corner. I’m thinking of trying to inject some spray glue underneath it. Do you have other ideas? David Gattie, Knutsford

AThis seems like a reasonable plan. Detach the fabric at the tailgate aperture and tunnel under it from front to rear with the aerosol.

To do the job properly – and permanently – you’ll have to remove various fixtures, fittings and trim and wrestle the whole lining and backboard out through the tailgate. Remove the old fabric and clean the remains of the rotten foam from the backboard with a rag dampened with petrol.

Cover the board in contact adhesive. Place a new roll of fabric at one end and fasten it securely. Unroll it across the board while spraying on aerosol contact adhesive, but don’t stick it down. When it reaches the other end, secure all four sides with a little tension in the fabric and then rub from the middle outwards in a circular motion to bond the fabric.

Don’t be stingy with the glue or it’ll later come loose where it’s under the most tension. Fresh fabric can be bought from Woolies (01778 341847, woolies-trim.co.uk).
