Ramp up the danger

-

QMy drive has a shallow slope. I want to raise my MGB on ramps at one end and axle stands at the other. Should I have the ramps up-slope and stands down-slope? And which way should the car face?

Andy Williams, Derby

AFrankly, we’d recommend finding a flat surface. Axle stands are fickle things that are prone to topple at the first sign of movement.

Using a combination of ramps and stands is far from ideal, but if you put the rear wheels against the stop on the end of the ramps, apply the handbrake and have an assistant watch them as you raise the other end of the car, you should be OK.

?? ?? Ramps and axle stands are fine – but mixing them is not advised.
