Sam fails to fix a starter motor with a clothes peg

My Austin Seven’s starter stopped working abruptly. Disassembl­y brought a firm diagnosis: the spring that pressed the earth brush against the commutator had snapped. I didn’t have a spare to hand, so I crudely adapted a clothes peg spring to fit. It worked well… for about five starts. The low-grade spring quickly lost its springines­s when subjected to heat.
