IN CONVERSATION WITH A RENAULT 4 OWNER

Andy Mcghee tells us why he’ll drive nothing else but a Renault 4…

-

1 Are you an avid 4 fan?

‘I have driven nothing but Renault 4s since 1985, when my Renault 5 broke down. Back then, R4s were cheap and plentiful so I ended up buying one – and thereafter numerous versions, often very cheaply! Since getting my first, I have never felt the need to own a different kind of car as the Renault 4 fulfils all my needs as daily driver, load-carrier and holiday transport. My wife, Mali, and I have a fleet of three at home – a 1986 GTL, a 1983 F6 van that I’ve owned for about 25 years and the one you see in the picture, a 1972 Deluxe.’

2 What’s the best thing about owing one?

‘The Renault 4 is extremely practical and also very straightforward to work on. You tip forward the large bonnet and it’s all there, laid before you. Fifty miles-pergallon is easily achievable, especially in the GTL, which was a model developed to sell during the fuel-strapped Seventies. I find them relaxing to drive, with performance perfectly adequate in most situations and they are, of course, incredibly comfy! I like my 845cc Deluxe the most.

It’s less powerful than the 1108cc GTL, but its lightness somehow makes it feel sprightlier.’ 3 What about fixing them? ‘These are simple, tough and reliable cars with parts surprisingly easy to source. If you’re determined enough, you can find everything! Other owners are really great and there are zillions of videos online, showing you how to fix a Renault 4. I’ve learned plenty from those. There’s a great club with a friendly forum, which I contribute to now and then and numerous specialists. You are very much part of an exclusive club anyway, wherever you drive.

The reaction is brilliant.

Like many French cars, it was an instant icon. There’s great pride in them in France. Whether you’re rich or poor, there’s no snobbery when it comes to a Renault 4. We simply couldn’t imagine being without one now!’
