‘The Pembrokeshire Classic Car Club brings these cars together!’
2007 Aston Martin Vantage V8, 1934 Riley Monaco 9hp Simon Dixon, Pembroke, and David Brockway, Hook, Pembroke
Simon: I’ve had the Aston since 2011 and it’s been great. I’ve always wanted one, and when things went well at work I decided to treat myself. It’s great to drive, sporting and comfortable at the same time. It is pretty reliable as well, although when things do go wrong it isn’t cheap. A couple of times I have realised that the part I need is also available as a Ford, Jaguar or Volvo part at a fraction of the cost that Aston want to charge... but doing the research is part of the fun. I try to do as much work on it as I can, but the diagnostic tools are only really available at Aston, which hampers me a bit. I love being part of the Pembroke Classic Car Club because it brings so many varied cars together, the Vantage and Monaco being a prime example.
David: I agree! This is my Riley – with its 1098cc engine it was quite a sporting car in its day and cost the princely sum of £275 when it was sold new to a farmer from Cardigan. He kept it for 30 years before selling to Bob Colley with only 42k on the clock. I bought it from Bob in 1967 for £37 and 10 shillings. I used it as my everyday car, and I still do locally. I replaced the big ends in 1970, and in 2013 I had the gearbox replaced for the second time. It's quite shabby chic, but also completely original. When people jump in they say, ‘ah, that’s how an old car should smell!’
