QUICK CHAT WITH AN XJ-S OWNER

Larry Knight tells us why he loves his 1989 Jaguar XJ-S Convertible

-

1 Why do you like the Jaguar XJ-S?

‘Like many people, I’ve always loved the Jaguar E-type but sadly never owned one – and it’s unlikely I ever will, given the way prices have gone!

I’ve always thought the XJ-S is the next best thing and a really beautiful car. Not too long ago, many coupés would turn up on the banger track which tells you how cheap they had become. But they have come into their own now – they’re smooth, comfy and such a great car to own.’

2 Tell us about your XJ-S

‘Mine is a 1989 XJ-S V12 Convertible. It’s only had one previous owner, an elderly man who had really looked after the car. My friend worked as a salesman for a

Jaguar dealer in Lincolnshire and actually sold it to him brand new! It is in stunning condition, thanks to being so well cared for. It had been a company car, which he had bought when he retired.’

3 You hadn’t intended to buy it though, right?

‘Correct! Having previously bought a very scruffy Triumph TR6 and totally restored it, I was tempted by a good offer from a fellow enthusiast and so sold it. I was in the process of looking for another TR6 so cast the net among classic car dealers, including my aforementioned friend and former Jag salesman, John. He told me about this XJ-S, so it was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up!’

4 Has it had much work?

‘Apart from being Waxoyled, the bodywork is as it came out of the factory. It had both front and rear subframes renewed, plus some other work here and there to keep it running well and looking good. But it hasn’t been too demanding.’

5 Do you use it much?

‘I do! There are some great roads here in Somerset – it’s fun to take it through Cheddar Gorge and I meet with other members of the Bridgwater Classic & Vintage Vehicle Club often. It’s such a rewarding car to drive – usually with the top down!’
