Practical Classics (UK)

MARKET ANALYSIS

- with James Walshe

Prices are, as you’d expect, very healthy for any classic that’s as usable as a Golf. Cars of the Eighties are rising in value anyway, but the MKII Golf is at the top of the pile in that respect, given its iconic status. Currently, you might still find a C, CL or GL for about a grand or so, but you’ll need to closely inspect it for rot and wear. Any GTI model will command a higher price than the standard car, but some sellers are getting a little carried away, so don’t fall for unrealistic dealer prices or ambitious private sellers. There’s a premium for the GTI 16v and values of the bonkers Rallye version have risen to new heights of late. Unless you’re into that sort of thing, avoid heavily modified cars as they’re more likely to have been ragged, and returning one to standard spec will be difficult and costly.
