GARY BATES, OWNER TRGB – A SPECIALIST VIEW

The 1147cc and 1296cc Spitfire engines are tough units that can readily cope with upgrades to produce a bit more power. The choice of camshaft is critical to how well an engine can breathe, so has a big influence on power output. Fortunately, the Triumph engineers created a big selection of cam profiles for the SC Engine. Fitting the Spitfire MKIII camshaft to our earlier engine is a sensible upgrade that can give an extra 10-15bhp when combined with a gas-flowed cylinder head plus suitable needles in the standard SU carburettors. It’s also a safe, reliable modification: as this profile was used as standard in thousands of Spitfires, it has been road tested over millions of miles.
