1989 Eunos Roadster

-

Mrs S and I will be heading north in our 1989 Eunos Roadster, just the two of us, roof down if the weather’s decent, taking in the vistas, the breeze and the smells we’ve missed for so long.

In a car like this you’re part of the landscape and the topography, not just an onlooker, and you bond with the world through all senses except taste (except for that one time I used the windscreen washer, roof down, when stationary).

After no preparation beyond checking the fluids, the tyre pressures and booking some places to stay, we’ll go via the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to the North Yorkshire moors, head on to Northumberland and take in the Cheviot Hills before maybe visiting MX-5 specialist Goodwood Sports Cars in Berwick-upon-tweed. Then we’ll aim south again to meet Hadrian’s Wall and take a trans-england run beside it on the B6318. There’ll be B&BS and, yes, the novel experience of eating out. We’ll have no tight schedule to keep, just the joy of a properly long road trip in a great little car. The best part will be… just being there and reconnecting with the wild world for a week, from our carefree sports car.

Last trip just for fun

Driving this very Eunos Roadster through the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire on holiday last September.

First post-lockdown trip destination

Pembrokeshire, again, in June for a week’s break in St Davids – but it will be with family and dog, so transport will be the ever-useful 2001 Toyota Corolla Verso.

First show I plan to attend

Ashley Green Classic Car Show in the next village on July 3, probably with my Rover 2000 TC. It’s always surprising to discover what lurks locally behind closed garage doors.
