WELCOME TO THE WORKSHOP

Where the team is feeling especially unexceptional!

Is restoration the new rock n roll? It certainly appears to be, judging by the number of completed project stories that are coming into the office. I can’t remember a time when there were so many fresh-offthe-production-line classics to choose from. The pandemic has few silver linings, but the time it has afforded some of us to get into the workshop is now bearing fruit.

You must never underestimate the hours, skill and dedication it takes to complete a full restoration, but the satisfaction it brings is unbeatable. It brings you close to your classic. You will never know a car as well as one you have rebuilt yourself.

But it isn’t for everyone and that is why, in this issue, we are exploring the theme ‘to buy or to restore?’ and our cover cars illustrate the question. Peter Rymill’s XR4I is a perfect example of a completely original car. One taht is a moment in time frozen, the same vehicle in its entirety that came out of the factory, an authentic, original piece of history.

Michael Owen’s MG Montego, on the other hand, was found in a field with a tree growing through the boot and has, in Michael’s hands, been back to bare metal and recreated ‘as new’. To be honest, here at PC, we love both but my Staff Car Saga illustrates the pitfalls. My Marina resto project has fallen victim to a third party meltdown and is now back at the workshop with a deadline looming.

So, buying a good original car is a stressfree option, and one that will get just as many looks and plaudits. I can’t help thinking, though, when the Marina is done, I’ll have a greater sense of satisfaction (to go with a smaller bank balance and less hair!).
