ESSENTIAL CHECKS

-

1

Engines are generally tough and simple to work on but listen for top end rattle and check for blue smoke. Poor idling indicates fuel injection issues on posh models while fuel pumps can be troublesome on CVH units. Poor starting is the giveaway.

2

Suspension was Macpherson struts at the front and coils on the rear. Listen for strange noises and feel for wayward handling – it could indicate a hard life or previous accident damage. Warped discs are common but, like most things on a Sierra, nothing is too complex to put right.

3

Gearboxes were uprated later on in the Sierra’s life, so beware of noise and worn transmissions that jump out of gear.

Cars from 1989 onwards got a much tougher ‘box.

The transfer box on the 4x4 is worth paying special attention to, too.

4

Bodywork rots in ferocious style if left unchecked. It’s unlikely you’ll find a car that’s never been welded so check the quality of the work done and it’ll give you an idea of how well your potential purchase has been cared for. Pay special attention to the floorpan, sills and wheel arches. Also, if you’re looking at a MKI, spend some time looking at the transmission tunnel as damage there can affect structural integrity.

5

Cabins are fairly well made, although a cracked dash top is very common. Feel around the carpets very carefully as damp could indicate rust or a fault in the sunroof.

6

The XR4I model, with its bi-plane spoiler and plastic cladding, can be a challenge to own due to scarce parts, but it has its own very dedicated club.

?? ?? XR4I bits harder to find, but club support great.
