THE OILY BITS
1 Oil pump
To refit the oil pump, you’ll have to loosen the surrounding three casing clamp nuts/bolts. Line the drive tang up with the slot in the camshaft end. Make sure pump end plate is flat and free of scoring.
2 Oil strainer, oil cooler
Fit the oil strainer and closing plate in the sump (use new gaskets and copper washers). Replace the oil cooler with new seals. Get two extra seals (same type), split the cooler and replace hardened old ones.
3 Oil valves
Refit the oil pressure valve(s) with new sealing washer(s). The valve with the longer spring is at the pulley end of the engine. Make sure the bore(s) are clean and oil the piston and spring before refitting.
4 Rear deck
Put the wraparound rear deck shroud in place. Go around all the shrouds making sure that they interlock correctly. Fit clamping bolts and nuts between sections. Tighten all fasteners at the end.
5 Exhaust
Refit the exhaust now if reinstating an inlet manifold that incorporates heat risers. Make sure all studs are in good order. Replaced chewed or very rusty ones; helicoil stripped cylinderhead threads.
6 Manifolds
Refit the inlet manifold assembly. Our EMPI twin carburettor setup requires a 3/8in NPT threaded hole (15.25mm drill) to be made in each manifold above cylinders 1 and 3 to fit a vacuum balance pipe.
7 Throttle linkage: One
The carburettors have no choke facility, but do need a linkage between the throttles, operated by the original, central throttle cable which passes through the fan shroud. The kit contains all needed parts.
8 Throttle linkage: Two
We’ve made a video of how to install the linkage, which should become available soon on the Heritage Parts Centre website.
9 Final steps
Finally, fit the fan belt and clutch and fill the engine with oil. Check all accessible parts and fasteners. The engine can be test-run before installation if you can mount it to a gearbox (which holds the starter).
