Two Dads ADOPTING

PAUL AND JEREMY TALK ABOUT HOW JOE, AGED 3, BECAME THE CENTRE OF THEIR WORLD

-

The reason that we made the decision to become dads? Simple… family! Both of us are from familyorientated households and this was a large part of what we had in common. We just wanted to provide a child with a loving family environment in which they could flourish. We did a lot of research into adoption and then got in touch with Adoptionplus, who impressed us with the level of support and therapy services they offer to adopted children up until their 18th birthday.

After going through all the preparation and the panels, we began to get excited about what was to come. First meeting Joe... we were so nervous it was unreal. Sure, we’d met everyone involved in Joe’s life, made a plan of action, a welcome book and even a video of us and our home. But as prepared as we were, we were still really anxious about his reaction to us.

From day one Paul got a big hug as soon as we walked in. It took a little longer for a connection to happen with me, but with Adoptionplus we had ongoing access for support, not just for Joe but for us too. As time has gone on Joe, now in school, has changed tremendously. He’s calmer and more settled. We are so proud of what he has achieved and of ourselves in being able to provide this for him. The love is unquestionable as any parent’s for their child is. Adoption has been an emotional rollercoaster. Would we change any of it? Not one minute. Yes, being a parent can be hard, but there’s nothing more rewarding than hearing the uncontrollable laughter of your child and knowing that you are making a difference.
