“I’m proud of the progress that has been made on lesbian and gay rights over the last 20 years. The last Labour government did so much to advance LGBT equality: equalising the age of consent, abolishing Section 28, outlawing discrimination, granting adoption rights, and creating civil partnerships. In opposition, our support for samesex marriage ensured that the Act passed.
But there is more to do. In some parts of the world, LGBT people are still fighting discrimination and persecution – which is why I announced that, as Prime Minister, I will appoint Lord Michael Cashman as the first international envoy for LGBT rights, championing gay and transgender rights internationally.
At home, Labour will deliver strong action to tackle homophobic bullying in our schools. Under Labour’s plan, supported by Stonewall, schools will show zero tolerance of homophobia in the classroom and playground, and require all teachers to be trained to tackle homophobic bullying.
