FIRST STEPS TO A FAMILY
First Steps Reproductive Health
Doctor Dixon has helped patients seeking family building options for the last 13 years. She views her role as a fertility specialist to be a privilege and prides herself on offering individualised patient care. She is a highly trained Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist (REI). She has been actively involved in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) since 2002.
Her current practice is oriented towards patients struggling with infertility, as well as those seeking 3rd party options for family planning (for example, patients who are not necessarily infertile, but are in obligate need of eggs, a uterus or sperm). We believe Canada is the best jurisdiction in which to have a family for the LGBTQ community. Therefore, Doctor Dixon’s vision in building First Steps Fertility and – the soon to be opened – First Steps Reproductive Health, is to provide and support all types of families. At First Steps, we know that embarking on the journey to parenthood is not an easy one; that is why First Steps strives to support all individuals to navigate through the daunting world of fertility, so that their experience/ journey to parenthood can be made simple and straightforward.
The goal for First Steps Reproductive Health is to advocate and provide a centre that is patient oriented, and state-of-the-art, while offering individualised, compassionate and evidencebased medical care for all patients, no matter their marital status, sexual orientation, or ethnic/ religious background. How do we accomplish this? By providing patients –whether local, national or international – with informative, educational, and easy to understand programs.
First Steps has presented in educational programs geared toward the LGBTQ community. In early 2015, First Steps sponsored a training video, produced by the “LGBTQ Parenting Network” entitled “Scenes from a Fertility Clinic – LGBTQ People & Assisted Human Reproduction”. First Steps also sponsored a booth at the annual Toronto Pride Week. In October 2015, Doctor Dixon attended the annual conference of “The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM)”. There, Doctor Dixon was invited to join the LGBTQ “Special Interest Group” and was present at their Inaugural Meeting.
Personally, Doctor Dixon has gone through fertility treatments herself, thereby giving her a unique perspective as a care provider as well. Doctor Dixon is dedicated to offering world class quality medical care in order to help others build their families, particularly all groups that are often not heard or forgotten.
