Theme-park thrills in Dubai

-

No one could ever accuse Dubai of thinking small. The go-to destination for winter sun – and shopping in the huge malls – is now taking on Orlando to become the place to go for thrills.

And while it may not have Mickey and co, what Dubai can boast is all-new parks and rides, and the promise of smaller queues. Plus, the shorter flight (about seven hours) and time difference means jet lag is less of an issue. Amwaj Rotana hotel is located just a quick stroll from the white sands and clear Arabian Sea.

For a bird’s-eye view of the city, go up the Burj Khalifa. It’s the tallest tower in the world, yet it takes just a minute for the lift to propel you to the 124th floor (from £28 per person). Make time to head out of the city for a 4x4 desert safari (from £61 per person) – hold on tight as the driver skims across the sand dunes. Longer tours feature a sunset stop with barbecue dinner, shisha (Arabic water pipe) and a belly dancer. In Dubai’s fantastic new amusement parks, you’ll find more thrills for the whole family. The newest is IMG Worlds of Adventure – the world’s biggest indoor theme park, which cost $1billion to build!

Its four themed zones include Marvel and Cartoon Network, and kids will love journeying through the Lost Valley with its dinosaur-themed rides (Tickets from £47 per person for adults and children).

Adrenaline junkies must visit the even bigger Dubai Parks and Resorts. Split into sections, Legoland is perfect for younger visitors, while all ages can enjoy the water park. The Motiongate section is inspired by Hollywood, with rides based on everything from Shrek to The Hunger Games. SUNSHINE BILL A two-day, four parks anytime ticket, costs from £98 per person for adults and children. Book in advance for the best price.
