Kick up your energy with superfruit berries

-

Secretly over the worthy greens? Berries are the superfruit for a spring cobweb clear. Don’t fret about downing bagfuls – berry powders are the way to go. ‘They’re so in vogue,’ says naturopath Rick Hay. ‘Antioxidant-rich, they boost immunity, help with cognition and support your body’s natural detox.’

WHICH BERRIES? All the darks are good – acai, blueberry, blackcurrant, goji and maqui are fabulous. Use them singly, mix them up or buy a blend. It’s your call.

HOW MUCH? One to three teaspoons a day.

Drink them ‘Health nuts are using them to replace artificial energy drinks with one to three teaspoons in water, juice or smoothies,’ says Rick.

Eat them The new energy breakfast. Blend a handful of oats with a splash of almond milk, 1-3tsps berry powder and ½ banana. Pour into a bowl and top with banana, dark berries and seeds. Yum! • Find Rick Hay’s (aka the Superfoodist) wisdom at thesuperfoodist.com.

Time was when spring tonics were the thing to clear the system after a long winter. Suddenly, they’re hip again and make for a fantastic kick-ass boost. Tonic maker Tanita de Ruijt recommends a turmeric and ginger combo to get your body humming. ‘Turmeric is a powerful liver-cleansing spice with potent anti-inflammatory benefits, too,’ enthuses Tanita. ‘Drink two to three times a week if you need a lift. Otherwise, weekly.’
