An evening out at the movies

-

THE GUERNSEY LITERARY POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY Don’t let the title (adapted from Mary Ann Shaffer’s novel) put you off. This is a touching tale of love, friendship and loss, seen through the eyes of a literary society that survived the Nazi occupation. Lily James plays the writer who arrives post war to tell their story, forming unexpected bonds in the process. Michiel Huisman stars as the handsome fellow who sweeps the writer off her feet. Brilliant.

Out 20 April

TULLY

Charlize Theron plays Marlo, a woman buckling under the weight of nappies, sleepless nights and post-baby bulge. Enter the quirky and wise Tully (Mackenzie Davis), who is ‘perfect in every way’. Or is she? She’s here to whip things into shape – including Marlo’s other kids and her hopeless husband, Drew. Out 20 April

I FEEL PRETTY

Amy Schumer splits the crowd here. She plays Renee, an averagelooking woman who lacks confidence until she bangs her head and suddenly sees herself as beautiful. Some think Schumer is doing a disservice to women with real problems; others think it’s a hilarious take on our looks-obsessed world.

You decide. Out 4 May

A QUIET PLACE

Emily Blunt and her husband John Krasinski (who also directs) star in this chiller about a family who must exist in total silence. If they make a noise – including speaking – a terrifying, unknown entity will hunt them and their children down. But how long can they keep it up? Hang on to your hats.
