Kazia Pelka solves your beauty dilemmas

Q What’s the right way to use eye cream?

A Listening to the average beauty counter consultant, you’d be forgiven for thinking eye cream is dangerous, as the advice usually given is to use an amount the size of a grain of rice. I say: by the time you’ve distributed this amount between your ring fingers, for the gentlest application, it has disappeared. Instead, use an amount the size of a small pea and tap it gently around the eye area, not forgetting the hardest-working part, at the side of the eye where crow’s feet form. Keep tapping until all the cream has absorbed. The area should feel – and look – hydrated. Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream, £24.99, is an all-singing, all-dancing, colour-correcting gem; Nivea Cellular Anti-age Eye Cream, £15.75, is a great budget option with hyaluronic acid for extra moisture.

Q Is there a place for powder now my skin’s older and getting dry?

A Absolutely. Take a small amount of loose powder on to a velour puff and press into the palm of your hand to distribute. Start over your nose and work the pad into your skin with a press, roll and lift motion. Continue over your chin, cheeks and sides of the face; avoid the skin around your eyes, as it’s not oily and the powder can emphasise lines here. I avoid my forehead for the same reason. Lightly swirl a fluffy brush over your face to blend thoroughly and help the powder last. A loose powder I like is bareminerals Mineral Veil, £22.
