An evening out at the movies
THE WIFE
Glenn Close plays Joan Castleman, the wife who sacrificed her ambitions as a writer to support her philandering husband, Joe (Jonathan Pryce).
He’s about to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, which finally detonates an earthquake of resentment from Joan. Close aces it. Out 28 September
THE LITTLE STRANGER
This adaptation of the Sarah Waters ghost story is a corker. Set in the 1940s, it stars Domhnall Gleeson as Dr Faraday, who returns to the country estate where his mother once worked. He now discovers a family haunted (quite literally) by a past secret. Charlotte Rampling (above) also stars. Out 21 September
A STAR IS BORN
Bradley Cooper directs and stars as hard-living country singing star, Jackson Maine, in this third remake of the Hollywood weepie. He discovers and falls for a talented younger singer, played by Lady Gaga. But when her career ascends, his nosedives. Can Gaga follow in the footsteps of Streisand in the leading lady role? Out 5 October
THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS
Jack Black is Jonathan Barnavelt, who takes in his orphaned nephew, Lewis (Owen Vaccaro). The 10-year-old discovers that his eccentric uncle is a warlock, while neighbour, Mrs Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), is a witch. Pure magic! Out 21 September
