HAT & MITTS SIZE

To fit an average adult head and hands.

MATERIALS

Three 50g balls of King Cole Luxury Merino DK in Slate Blue 2619 for making both Hat and Mitts (see Notes).

Pair of 4mm knitting needles.

TENSION

24 sts and 54 rows to 10cm square over un-stretched patt using 4mm needles.

NOTES

● The tension is measured when the piece is laid flat and not stretched at all, so only the upper ridges show on RS or WS.

● You will need 2 x 50g balls if you are only making the hat, but there will be sufficient remaining plus another ball to make the mitts.

HAT

With 4mm needles, cast on 118 sts.

1st row (WS) K to end. 2nd row P to end. 3rd row K to end. 4th row K to end. 5th row P to end. 6th row

K to end. These 6 rows form the ridged patt and are repeated 12 times more, then the 1st to 3rd rows again.

Shape top 1st dec row (RS) [K7, k2tog] 13 times, k1. 105 sts. P 1 row. 2nd dec

row [K6, k2tog] 13 times, k1. 92 sts.

Patt 3 rows. 3rd dec row [K5, k2tog] 13 times, k1. 79 sts. P 1 row. 4th dec row

[K4, k2tog] 13 times, k1. 66 sts. Patt 3 rows. 5th dec row [K3, k2tog] 13 times, k1. 53 sts. P 1 row. 6th dec row [K2, k2tog] 13 times. k1. 40 sts. Patt 3 rows.

7th dec row [K1, k2tog] 13 times. 27 sts. P 1 row. 8th dec row [K2tog] 13 times, k1. 14 sts. Patt 3 rows. 9th dec row

[K2tog] 7 times. 7 sts. Cut the yarn leaving a long end, thread through rem sts, pull up and secure, then join the seam, matching rows.

MITTS LEFT HAND

With 4mm needles, cast on 41 sts. Work in 6-row patt as given for Hat throughout. Work 8 repeats of the

6 rows, then the 1st to 3rd rows again **.

P 1 row. Next row K16, m1, k9, m1, k24. Cont in this way, keeping the 6-row patt correct and increasing 2 sts on every RS row with 2 sts more between the 2 inc sts each time until the following rows have been worked: Next row

(RS) K16, m1, k15, m1, k24. K 1 row. P 1 row. 57 sts. Next row (WS) K24, cast off 15 sts knitwise, k to end. Next row K17, k2tog tbl, k to end. 41 sts. Patt a further 16 rows. Cast off knitwise on WS. Join seams matching rows.
