Finding YOUR mojo MISSING
A loss of libido doesn’t have to spell the end of a healthy sex life
If your sex drive is slowing down and you’re not sure why, don’t worry. Whatever the cause, there are plenty of solutions to help get your love life back on track.
LIFE’S UPS AND DOWNS
Anxiety and stress can lead to a lack of sleep, disturbing your natural sexual rhythm. ‘Often, our heads get overwhelmed with to-do lists, or we can feel too exhausted to get frisky,’ explains psychotherapist and sex and relationship expert Lucy Beresford.
‘Skin-on-skin contact, whether it’s a massage, kissing or stroking, can have a beneficial effect, helping us to tackle negative emotions.’
HORMONAL CHANGES
Your libido is largely controlled by your hormonal make-up. When this changes, so too can your sex drive, particularly during the menopause. ‘Loss of libido, painful sex and vaginal dryness are prominent menopausal side effects for many women,’ explains intimate health expert Dr Shirin Lakhani. The solution? Don’t suffer in silence. ‘Rather than just putting up with these symptoms (after all, you can spend up to a third of your life postmenopausal), talk to your friends and partner, and seek advice from your GP.’
SELF-ESTEEM STRUGGLES
For many women, self-esteem and sexuality are closely connected; as you grow older and your view of yourself changes, your sexuality might shift, too. ‘Whether it’s finding grey hairs, noticing your body changing during the menopause or dealing with new challenges at work, wobbly confidence can have a knock-on effect on how desirable you feel,’ says Lucy.
Sex toys – used alone or with a partner – will help put you back in touch with your sexuality. Lucy adds, ‘The release of feelgood hormones during orgasm will help you to regain your confidence.’
