Everyone’s talking about… DNA testing kits

We’re all hooked on TV shows such as Who Do You Think You Are?, so it’s no surprise that people are tempted by home DNA testing. Here’s what you need to know

Tempted to unlock your genetic code? Here’s the lowdown

HOW DOES THE TECH WORK?

By looking at your genetic code, DNA kits can tell you about your heritage – you could find unknown relatives or even come up with a personalised diet based on your family’s health history. Different DNA kits require different methods of collection; some ask you to spit into a tube, other require a cheek swab.

Once your sample is collected, you post it back via the pre-paid packaging. Results usually arrive within six to eight weeks.

WHAT’S THE COST?

Different brands offer different levels. A basic service starts at around £75 and will provide a simple breakdown of your ancestry composition, while a full account of the genetics behind your appearance and any possible health conditions you may be predisposed to will cost up to £200. Many offer the opportunity to connect with DNA relatives.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY DATA?

The lifeblood of these brands is trust, so it pays for them to keep your data safe. Consent is key here, so be vigilant when reading the small print. Be cautious if the company doesn’t give a detailed breakdown of their privacy information.

WHAT’S RIGHT FOR ME?

Think about what you want to find out. Do you want to know where your ancestors hail from, or connect with relatives you didn’t even know you had? DNA testing can be a useful tool when it’s used in conjunction with historical family-tree research, but critics warn that DIY kits that claim to give insights into future disease risk could place a burden on the NHS and cause unnecessary worry. There’s only so much our DNA blueprint can tell us; while we may have a genetic predisposition to develop a certain illness, our lifestyle and environment play a big part in whether or not we do.
