YOU WILL NEED

✽ Tracing paper and pencil ✽ Iron-on vinyl in pale pink, dark pink, black and gold glitter ✽ Scissors ✽ Plain fabric bag ✽ Iron ✽ Greaseproof paper ✽ Marker pen ✽ Embroidery thread

Happyflex iron on vinyls, £1.95 for an A4 sheet, happyfabric.co.uk. Plain canvas zip-up bag, £1.80, wordans.co.uk

TO MAKE

❶ Trace the templates (above) and use them to cut the following from vinyl (the shiny side is the front):

Dark pink: Bird body. Pale pink: Scalloped edging. Gold glitter: 5 stars. Black: 2 legs and a small triangle for a beak. If the feet are too fiddly, adapt our design or just cut them into triangles (see tip, below).

❷ Give the bag an iron first to remove any creases, then, once cool, position the legs, beak and body on to the bag, shiny side up. Carefully remove the body, but leave the beak and legs in position. Cover with a piece of greaseproof paper then, following the heating guidelines for the vinyl, press down the iron (ours was for 10 seconds on the ** setting).

❸ The vinyl covering can be removed after a few seconds, once it has cooled slightly. Carefully peel it back; if the vinyl underneath starts to lift, replace the covering and greaseproof paper and press down again with the iron for a few seconds.

❹ Next, position the body shiny side up, cover with greaseproof paper and press with the iron. Peel back the covering. Repeat for the scalloped edging and the stars, then dot the eye with a fine marker pen.

❺ Make a tassel from a whole skein of embroidery thread, then attach it to the zip with a tight knot.

TIP You can draw on to the front or back of the vinyl with ballpoint pen, but remember to cut inside the drawn lines to prevent the pen from transferring on to the bag.

Have fun experimenting with different motifs – try initials, flowers or an abstract face.
