MEASUREMEN­TS

To fit ages 2-3(4-5:6-7) years; Finished measuremen­ts Chest 71(74:77.5)cm; Length to shoulder 39(42:46)cm, Sleeve length 22(25:28)cm.

MATERIALS

4(4:5) 50g balls of Debbie Bliss Rialto DK in Burnt Orange 43 (A) and 2(3:3) 50g balls in Forest 100 (B). Pair of 3.75mm knitting needles and a short 3.75mm circular needle, 40cm long. Yarn available from lovecrafts.com.

TENSION

24 sts and 32 rows to 10cm square over st-st using 3.75mm needles.

BACK

** With 3.75mm needles and B, cast on 85(89:93) sts.

Beg with a k row, work 4 rows in st-st. Next row (RS) K1, [p1, k1] to end.

Next row P to end. The last 2 rows form broken rib and are repeated twice more.

Beg with a k row, work in st-st throughout as follows:

20(22:28) rows in B, [2 rows in A, 2 rows in B] 6 times. Cont in st-st in A only until back measures 26(28:31)cm from start of broken rib.

Shape armholes Cast off 7(8:9) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 71(73:75) sts **. Cont straight until armhole measures 11(12:13)cm, ending with a p row.

Shape back neck Next row

K22(23:24) sts, turn and leave rem 49(50:51) sts on a spare needle. Cast off 4 sts at beg of next row and foll WS row. Work 2 rows. Cast off rem 14(15:16) sts. With RS facing, slip 27 sts at centre back on to a holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts, k to end.

P 1 row. Cast off 4 sts at beg of next row and foll RS row. P 1 row. Cast off rem 14(15:16) sts.

FRONT

Work as Back from ** to **. Cont straight until 20 rows fewer have been worked than on Back to shoulder.

Shape front neck Next row

K29(30:31), turn and cont on these sts only, leave rem sts on a spare needle. Cast off 4 sts at beg (neck edge) of next row, 3 sts at beg of next 2 WS rows and 2 sts at beg of foll 2 WS rows, then 1 st at beg of next WS row. Work 8 rows. Cast off rem 14(15:16) sts. With RS facing, slip 13 sts at centre front on to a holder, rejoin yarn, cast off 4 sts, k to end.

P 1 row. Cast off 3 sts at beg (neck edge) of next 2 RS rows, 2 sts at beg of foll 2 RS rows, then 1 st at beg of next RS row. Work 9 rows. Cast off rem 14(15:16) sts.

SLEEVES

With 3.75mm needles and B, cast on 39(43:45) sts. Beg with a k row, work in 6 rows in st-st. Next row

(RS) K1, [p1, k1] to end. Next row P to end. The last 2 rows form broken rib and are repeated twice more. Beg with a k row, work in st-st throughout as follows: Work 6(4:2) rows. Inc row K2, m1, k to last 2 sts, m1, k2. Work 7 rows.

Rep the last 8 rows 5(6:8) times more then the inc row again to 53(59:65) sts,

at the same time, when sleeve measures 4(5:7)cm from start of broken rib, work as follows: [2 rows in A, 2 rows in B] 5 times, then cont in A only until sleeve measures 22(25:28)cm from start of broken rib. Place a marker at each end of last row, then work a further 9(10:11) rows. Cast off.

NECKBAND

Join both shoulder seams. With RS facing, 3.75mm circular needle, A and beg at left shoulder seam, pick up and k23 sts down left front neck, k across 13 sts at centre front, pick up and k23 sts up right front neck, 8 sts down right back neck, k across 27 sts at centre back, then pick up and k8 sts up right back neck. 102 sts.

Place a marker to show beg and end of round. 1st round [K1, p1] to marker. 2nd round K to marker. Rep these 2 rounds once more then the 1st round again. K 4 rounds. Cast off knitwise.

TO MAKE UP

With centre of cast off edge of sleeve to shoulder seam, sew sleeves into armholes with row-ends above markers sewn to sts cast off at underarm. Join side and sleeve seams, matching stripes.
