JOBS & MONEY

-

Q After a difficult year financially, what can I do to make Christmas extra special on a budget?

Marilyn: Make stuff! If you can’t recall the last time you gave handmade gifts, imagine the joy when people open a home-made card or unwrap a hand-printed T-shirt that has been created especially for them. It shouldn’t need explaining, but if it does, be honest and say you are on a budget this year.

Q I was made redundant and my industry has shrunk so much that I will never get another job unless I totally change direction. How do I work out what to do next?

Averil: You’re not alone. It isn’t personal and it isn’t your fault. What looks like a disaster could be a godsend, allowing you to shake up your life. Take stock. When are you at your best? What are your strengths? How else could you use them? What barriers have been removed by the pandemic? Now that lots of people are working from home, geography is less relevant, and training is possible without leaving the house. Look further afield for opportunities that give you a chance to use your strengths every day.

Q Recent events mean I’ve been thinking about how I want to live differently in 2021. How do I approach making changes?

Geraldine: Work out what your financial commitments are and what help is available. Look at the options you want to pursue, find out whether you need extra qualifications or skills, and what jobs you’d be prepared to do. It doesn’t have to be for ever – your next move can be a stepping stone to other things. Research the industries you’d like to work in and see how you can present yourself as an asset.

Averil: Have conversations about how you might make the world a better place, starting from the inside out. Whatever you decide to do, whether it’s reducing consumption, supporting local business, getting healthier, or expressing gratitude more regularly, start with tiny goals. Make them specific and do a celebration dance every time you succeed! Keep repeating until they become established as new habits, before moving on to the next one.
