Out and about York Minster (yorkminster.org) is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe and took 250 years to build. The Jorvik Viking Centre ( jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk) offers a trip back in time, and is especially good for kids, as is the free Railway Museum (railwaymuseum.org.uk). And chocolate lovers will adore York’s Chocolate Story (yorkschocolatestory.com), which traces the history of chocolate-making in the city.
Best tea room Bettys Café Tea Rooms (bettys.co.uk) remains York’s number one tearoom more than a century after it opened in 1919. Glam interiors are inspired by the Queen Mary ocean liner and cakes are legendary. Don’t miss the Fat Rascal – a tasty combination of a scone and rock cake.
Local eats Head to Shambles Food Court in Shambles Market for yummy street food. Make a beeline for Los Moros (losmorosyork.co.uk) for delicious North African cuisine and Krep Creperie (krepyork.com) or Shambles Kitchen (shambleskitchen. co.uk) for hearty eats on the go.
