WITHIN TEMPTATION’S FUTURISTIC VISIONS

Dutch group explore the dangers of the digital age on Hydra’s delayed follow-up.

Sharon den Adel says Resist has rekindled her passion for Within Temptation. The band’s seventh album, out via Spinefarm/Universal on December 14, nearly didn’t happen as the singer says personal issues sapped her creativity after 2014’s Hydra world tour.

“My father got sick and I didn’t have the energy I needed to write for Within Temptation. I didn’t know if I would continue with it,” she tells Prog. “I was very far from Within Temptation at the time so different music came out and that became [solo pop project] My Indigo. In a way, that was my therapy and it allowed me to rediscover what it was that

I love about Within Temptation. It took me a few years but I’m back on track again.”

Den Adel describes the new 10-track as having a more “modern sound” compared to the six-piece’s previous material, and it’s accompanied by a futuristic new image which will be reflected in their upcoming live shows.

“The songs are still bombastic, but in a different way. We still have elements of the orchestra but they’re not playing all over any more… it’s more roughened up,” she says. “Most of the songs are inspired by the digital age we’re living in right now and the hidden dangers surrounding that. If the wrong people get their hands on technology, they can abuse it and it can be very dangerous.”

Material from Resist will be previewed on the band’s forthcoming winter tour, which includes five UK shows scheduled for November. For the full list of dates and more, visit www.within-temptation.com. NRS
