JUPITER HOLLOW
Bereavement
CContemplative cosmic jaunt with youthful Canadian multi-instrumentalists.
ontinuing a musical trajectory and narrative arc from 2018’s debut album AHDOMN, the followup from Canadian duo Jupiter Hollow is a rich, varied and challenging collection which eschews easy genre labels.
Where L’Eau De Papineau is the sound of a folky pop band emerging from a forest soundscape replete with bird song, recent single The Rosedale is reminiscent of prime Kings X, and Kipling Forest delivers some brutal, bewildering prog metal riffs. Such stylistic eclecticism extends to the lead vocal throughout, with singer Kenny Parry evoking Geddy Lee, Devin
Townsend and Robert
Plant, even busting out some Cookie Monster death growls at one point.
Still, the playing is uniformly astounding, the arrangements imaginative, and the continuing underpinning story both suitably otherworldly and strangely timely. It’s made even more impressive by the fact that every jawdropping drum break, keyboard solo and spot-on harmonies has been created by two young men who are barely out of their teens.
Bereavement might be a confounding ride at times, but well worth the price of entry. Highly recommended.
