A rush of Hornby wagons

-

COLOURFUL intermodal wagons, a useful departmental van and aggregate wagons are among the latest ‘OO’ gauge rolling stock releases from Hornby, which recently has included a flood of sliding door Mk.3 stock, containers with new liveries, a useful empty KFA wagon and a Network Rail QQA Super GUV.

MSV aggregate wagons

A triple pack of 27t iron ore tipplers together with a single wagon was released in May, finished in BR bauxite as vacuum-braked MSVs and marked for aggregate traffic (R6965). Markings include a pool number, ‘stone’ symbol and maintenance panel with a 1975 date.

The actual model is based on the once numerous unfitted iron ore tipplers equipped with a double unfitted brake and 9ft wheelbase underframe and is an good representation of the type, matching the drawing on page

189 of An Illustrated History of BR Wagons Vol. 1 published by OPC.

The body is modelled as Diagram 1/180 and 1/181 wagons with the slightly taller body than the later Diagrams 1/183, 1/184 and the vacuum fitted (from new) Diagram 1/185 design. The wagons in the triple pack are numbered with consecutive numbers as B385896, B385897 and B385898 which are taken from a batch of 1450 wagons built to Diagram 1/184 with 10ft wheel base underframes.

Many of the wagons were converted to vacuum braking with a changeover lever for use on aggregate traffic reducing the weight to 26t.

Ocean Network Express (ONE) containers are loaded on TIPH93367.

No. B385898 is modelled on a Diagram 1/184 wagon, many of which were converted to vacuum brakes. The actual model is closer to a Diagram 1/180 and 1/181 wagons.

The livery details are neatly applied to the bodies and could be adapted to suit many other MSVs and wagons that were transferred to departmental use where bauxite livery complete with the ‘Stone’ symbol could be observed on many of the ZKV ‘Barbel’ fleet.

The body could be mounted on the correct underframe (Parkside Models 8-shoe clasp brake) to take advantage of the livery, yet the slight difference in body height would show if mixed in a train of Parkside Models wagons – there may be scope to reduce the body height.

Priced at £49.99 for the triple pack (R6965) and £16.99 for the single wagon (R6966), many modellers may ignore the detail differences to build up a typical 1970s block aggregate train.
