CLASS 20
PASSING Warrington Bank Quay at 16.40 on August 3, Nos. 20107 and 37521 were en route from Crewe to Appleby, the
Type 3 having failed while taking the Rail Charter Services empty coaching stock north the previous day. Following a week on ‘stand-by',
No. 20107 found itself working passenger trains on August 12 and 13, covering all three scheduled return journeys each day between Skipton and Appleby with ScotRail-liveried Brush Type 4 No. 47712. On August 19, the Type
1 ran light from Appleby to Carlisle to collect BR Standard Pacific No. 70000 Britannia after the steam locomotive failed on arrival with the 1Z70/07.50 from Crewe. The pair then ran south as a 22.00 Carlisle-Crewe, with the Type 1 hauling the incapacitated Pacific. August 19 was also notable for the sight of Nos. 20189 and 20205 ‘top-and-tailing' a trio of Loram-liveried Mk.2 coaches forming the 5V16/11.18 Derby RTC-Plymouth prior to heading back to the East Midlands next day.
CLASS 33
WITH several Class 37s based at Inverness during August, West Coast Railways' ‘Crompton' No. 33207, paired with ‘Heavyweight' No. 37706, powered the 1Z30/08.32 York-Carlisle and the 1Z43/16.43 return between York and Hellifield on August 18. ‘Royal Scot'
No. 46115 Scots Guardsman took the train forward over the Settle & Carlisle line.
Two days later the same Type 3s handled the 1Z24/07.37 CarnforthScarborough (via Skipton) as far as Holgate Sidings, York from where ‘Jubilee' No. 45562 Alberta (Galatea in disguise) worked through to the Yorkshire coastal resort. All three locomotives covered the diagram the following week (August 27) when the outward train left Carnforth at 06.10, routed over Copy Pit on this occasion.
CLASS 37
THE use of large-logo blue No. 37407 Blackpool Tower on the Skipton to Appleby shuttles was short lived. Locomotive Services' No. 37521 expired at Blackburn while heading the empty coaches from Crewe to Appleby on August 2, the train returning to Crewe where DRS Type 3 No. 37407 was hastily acquired as a substitute.
Next day the DRS machine operated all three round trips with No. 47593 Galloway Princess before No. 37521 returned on August 4 and handled the services on a dozen further occasions.
Nos. 37059 and 37069 enjoyed six days of trial running around the network with Loram coaches starting on
August 7 when the pair ‘top-and-tailed' Mk.2 No. 9525 and test coach 62287 on a trip from Derby RTC to Sheffield and back.
Subsequently the pair resumed their tour on August 13 and next day visited Leicester, Nuneaton, Walsall and Birmingham International with coach
Nos. 5810 and 5919 on an out-and-back trip from Derby. Another run on August 18 with the four Loram-liveried Mk.2s took in more of the West Midlands, while on August 19 the duo ventured to Nottingham and later passed Caverswall heading for Crewe, while August 20 found them at Sheffield, Chesterfield and Loughborough.
Among some non-test train duties for DRS ‘37s' was the use of Nos. 37402+ 37419 to power the 6K02/02.08 BescotBasford Hall and then 6X03/04.19 Basford Hall-Carlisle Yard on August 20.
Next morning found Nos. 37038 and 37716 passing Hexham with empty YDAs forming the 6Z88/08.46 Tyne SS-Carlisle Yard. The same pair travelled north to Inverness on August 26 with empty FCA wagons and a crane bound for Aberdeen to assist in clearing the main line south of the city following the tragic derailment that occurred on August 12.
Network Rail Type 3s Nos. 97302 and 97304 took the 6C70/21.48 Basford HallMachynlleth past Shrewsbury on August 22, returning to Crewe next morning before later powering the 6C71/19.33 Basford Hall-Pwllheli.
A quartet of West Coast Railways' English Electric Type 3s was based at Inverness during August in connection with the operation of loaded timber trains from Georgemas Junction to Inverness Yard for Victa Railfreight.
The loaded trains ran as 6Z69 from the Far North with Nos. 37516+37669 double-heading the first on August 4 leaving Georgemas Junction at 17.35. Other permutations of motive power included Nos. 37516+ 37685 on five occasions, Nos. 37669+ 37685 on August 13 and Nos. 37668+3 7685 on August 28.
CLASS 47
THE 1Z60/06.05 Wolverhampton-Crewe on August 15 was in the hands of
Nos. 47501 and 47805, the latter continuing north at the rear of the 1Z61/08.30 Crewe-Carlisle hauled by 4-6-0 No. 46100 Royal Scot. No. 47805.
Right: A sure sign autumn is just around the corner is when the railhead treatment train sets start heading out to their various bases. September 2 saw DRS
Type 3 No. 37218 take the East Anglian sets from York to Stowmarket – seen passing Thurston near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. performed similarly four days later, although on this occasion the special started from Crewe and was taken over the Settle & Carlisle line by Pacific No. 70000 Britannia. Unfortunately, a fault with the steam locative rendered it unable to haul the return trip, which No. 47805 was able to do instead.
Despite some motive power changes, the Skipton to Appleby ‘shuttles' had Brush Type 4 motive power throughout
August, with Nos. 47593 and 47712 performing regularly, often in company with each other.
Nos. 47501 and 47805 were in partnership once again on August 28 taking the 1Z10/06.33 Rugby-Kingswear down to Devon. Some 24 hours later, No. 47805 had charge of the 1Z60/05.55 Dorridge-Crewe, then ‘tailed' the 08.30 Crewe-Carlisle behind Stanier ‘Black 5' No. 45231.
Following a brief spell on RCS' ‘Staycation Express' on the Settle & Carlisle, No. 37407 found itself on Network Rail test train duties on August 22, ‘top-and-tail' with No. 37423 – the train seen in the early hours at Immingham West Junction forming the 1Q53 back to Derby RTC.
Another ‘Black 5' No. 44871 and a pair of former Virgin Trains Type 4s –
Nos. 47804+47802 – were also to be found at Crewe station on August 29, the steam engine and support coach having travelled from the East Lancashire Railway to attach to the 5Z45/06.50 CarnforthBristol empty stock. The following morning No. 47804 accompanied the ‘Black 5' on 1Z82/08.47 Bristol Temple Meads-Par charter, the steam locomotive being detached at Plymouth for servicing while the Type 4 took the train into Cornwall.
No. 47245 surprisingly found itself on passenger work two days later as part of a light engine transfer from Carnforth to Mossend and Fort William on August 1. When Stanier ‘Black 5' No. 45407 suffered a temporary fault, the Brush Type 4 was drafted in to work the afternoon ‘Jacobite' 2Y68/14.40 Fort William-Mallaig and 2Y69/18.40 return.
A trio of Type 4s – Nos. 47826, 47237 and 47804 – moved a vandalised coach from Southall to Carnforth on August 18, while No. 47802 was employed to take empty stock from Carnforth to York on August 22 for use on the following day's York to Carlisle tour.
CLASS 50
THE GBRf duo of Nos. 50007+50049 were tasked with moving Great Western ‘Flex' unit No. 769943 (the former No. 319443) as the 5Q69/12.36 Burton WetmoreReading Traincare on August 7, sandwiched between translator vehicles that the Class 50s had brought from Leicester. Once the unit had been left at Reading, Nos. 50007+50049 continued to Eastleigh with the two translators before returning them to Leicester on August 19.
August Bank Holiday Monday found No. 50050 out on the main line. Along with Nos. 37421 and 56049 it passed Beeston South Junction at 10.50 forming the 10.58 Toton TMD-Nottingham light engine transfer.

That same day, No. 56049 accompanied No. 70801 on the 6E36/16.17 Millerhill-Doncaster,
No. 56049 having spent the first three weeks of the month on the Basford Hall to Longport ballast jobs, prior to handing over to No. 56105 from August 21.
No. 56078 – with crane DRK81612 and runners in tow – formed the 6Z21/11.37 Rugby-Hinksey Yard on August 19, while No. 56302 spent much of the month in Scotland despite two trips south with the Grangemouth to Derby (Sinfin Sidings) tanks on August 2 and again a week later.
DC Rail's No. 56103 transferred Railvac No. 003 from Carstairs to Carlisle on August 10, going forward to Crewe Basford Hall with the machine next day. Thereafter, No. 56103 ran light to
Leicester to join fellow DCRO ‘Grid'
No. 56091, which has lain at Leicester depot since April.
CLASS 57

For example, on August 4, Nos. 57316 and 47804 ‘top-and-tailed' the 1Z30/08.32 York-Carlisle between York and Hellifield (via Wakefield and Leeds) before handing over to Bulleid Pacific
No. 35018 British India Line for the run over the S&C.
On August 7, Nos. 57313 and 57601 returned to ‘Northern Belle' duties, handling the 1Z30/06.41 Manchester Victoria-Edinburgh via the Calder Valley, York and Berwick-upon-Tweed. Next day, Nos. 57601 and 47804 were in partnership on the 1Z60/06.42 LiverpoolEdinburgh ‘Belle'.
Having taken empty coaches from Carnforth to Acton Lane four days earlier, Nos. 57316 and 47854 powered

The 57/3 was dispatched to the rear of 6H51 and hauled it back to Warrington Bank Quay to clear the line, the freight later going forward as far as Guide Bridge with the Class 66, assisted by No. 70017.
CLASS 60
MOST of the traffic to occupy the GBRf Class 60 fleet continues to emanate in the North East. Throughout August, Nos. 60021, 60056, 60076, 60085 and 60095 were regularly employed on workings between Tyne Dock, Lynemouth and Drax, while No. 60096 joined the party from August 24 after spending a month at Toton TMD, where No. 60002 had been since early March and No. 60026 since July 27.
Meanwhile, No. 60087 left Toton for Tyne Dock on August 27 and No. 60047 remained on Merseyside, though little used. On August 20 it escaped from Liverpool, briefly heading the 6E34/22.59 Tuebrook Sidings-Drax and returning the next day.

Previously, on August 5, No. 90035
returned to Crewe IEMD following its use on Midland Main Line overhead line tests. Along with a pair of Mk.3 coaches it was hauled via Hinckley and Stafford behind No. 67002.
CLASS 92
FLOODING disrupted many parts of the rail network during August.
On August 4, for example, the 1M16/20.45 Inverness-Euston Caledonian sleeper service was curtailed, and next day No. 92023 was noted at Warrington Bank Quay just after 10.00 forming the 5M16/06.30 Edinburgh-Wembley empty sleeping cars.
Similarly, No. 92043 was noted at Acton Bridge on August 12 in charge of the 3Z12/11.30 Polmadie-Wembley.
EThe line south of Aberdeen was blocked by the tragic accident at Stonehaven on August 12, leading to the Aberdeen Waterloo Goods to Irvine Caledonian Paper on August 19 being routed via Inverness and the Highland Main Line. It is seen passing the site of Auldearn station, near Narin, with No. 70815 in charge.
