Night Tube services begin on the Central and Victoria Lines - and 50,000 journeys are made on the first night.

MORE than 50,000 journeys were made on the first night of London’s new Night Tube services on the Central and Victoria Lines on August 19.

The service, which is now running on Friday and Saturday nights, is expected to boost London’s economy by £77 million a year and support about 2,000 permanent jobs (500 directly through operation of the service).

The busiest stations on the first night were Oxford Circus (6,500 people tapped in) and Stratford (4,250 people tapped out).

“The Night Tube is going to provide a huge boost to our capital and very clearly demonstrates that London is open," said London Mayor Sadiq Khan. "It was real pleasure for me to see first-hand how workers

and those who had been out enjoying everything our city has to offer could take advantage of this fantastic new service.”

Six trains per hour run through central London on Night Tube lines, between 0030 and 0530. Transport for London plans to extend the service to the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly Lines in the autumn, followed by further expansion to include the Metropolitan, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City Lines once the modernisation programme is complete, and then potentially to parts of London Overground in 2017 and Docklands Light Railway by 2021.

Plans for the Night Tube were announced by then London Mayor Boris Johnson in September 2014 ( RAIL 759), with the intention that operation would begin a year later. However, introduction was delayed owing to a dispute with unions over pay and working conditions.
