Durable diesel
‘Emission-free is the future’, states a letter in RAIL 819. I’m not so sure - we were still using steam in the 1950s and I think we’ll still be using diesels in the 2050s.
Hydrogen fuel will be even more expensive than electricity, so I suspect the diesel will be with us for a long time to come. The ‘Trump effect’ means we shan’t have to worry about carbon dioxide in the future. Pollution by particulates and nitrogen dioxide can be mitigated by exhaust filters and urea injection.
I believe the diesel engine will soldier on for several more decades because it is relatively simple and cheap to run. Rex Hora, Reading
