Rail (UK)

DEFINITIONS

-

The following apply throughout:

a)A = Adult price; R = Price ONLY for holders of a Senior, 16-25, Disabled Person’s or Two Together Railcard. Once a Rover or Ranger has been purchased using a Two Together Railcard it may not then be used for any journey starting between 0430 and 0929 on Mon-Fri; C = Price for a child ( 5-15 inclusive - children under 5 travel free). If a Family & Friends Railcard can be used this is stated, at least one child must travel, and the child fare is then 19% of the undiscounted adult fare (minimum £1). If a Forces Railcard can be used this is stated and the child fare is then 19% of the undiscounted adult fare (minimum £1). If a Network Railcard can be used this is stated, the £13 minimum fare still applies Mon-Fri, and the child fare is then 19% of the undiscounted adult fare (minimum £1). A Gold Card is then automatically accepted (no minimum fare) for which the child fare is £ 2 flat rate. Once a Rover or Ranger has been purchased using a Network Railcard or a Gold Card it may not then be used before 1000 on Mon-Fri (0930 for a Gold Card).

b) Any time restriction applies Monday-Friday only, but not Bank Holidays. Note that Scottish Bank Holidays sometimes differ from those in England and Wales. On a Rover valid in England and Scotland restrictions are lifted only in the country for which the Bank Holiday applies.

c) Except for Arriva Trains Wales’ Rovers, tickets with a morning time restriction remain valid until 0429 the following day. Similarly, all tickets remain valid until 0429 the day after the expiry date.

d) Where Scottish Rovers refer to restrictions on trains arriving at certain stations before a certain time, such restrictions apply between ANY two stations served by those trains.

e) Unless stated, Standard Class tickets are valid as part-payment towards First Class, provided the excess of the difference in single (or return) fares is paid before joining the train (or the usual supplements are paid on-train for Weekend First upgrades).

f) Except where specified, tickets are valid on any train, regardless of operator, except for charter, steam services, Heathrow Express, Heathrow Connect between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow, and Eurostar trains. They are not valid on London Underground services, but ARE valid on London Overground and TfL Rail (Crossrail). They are not valid on PTE Metro systems such as the Tyne & Wear Metro, except where stated. Open access operators Hull Trains and Grand Central do not accept some Rovers/Rangers, but details of this appear with the relevant Rover.

g) Flexi-tickets with validities such as ‘any 3 days in 7’ are self-validated.

h) Those travelling from outside a Rover/ Ranger area to within it need only book to the boundary, regardless of whether the train calls, but only providing the Rover/ Ranger is already held and is already valid.

i) Sleepers may be used with the All-Line Rover, but Sleeper berth fees are payable.

j) Some tickets offer discounts at tourist attractions, youth hostels etc, but these are not usually mentioned here.

k) Where a Rover area is defined with boundaries that are lines, these always form part of the area.
