Cumbrian double-track
I wonder if R Eaton has ever visited west Cumbria, when he asks for a bridge across the Duddon estuary
(Open Access, RAIL 824). This was part of the original plan for the line, but was abandoned as unfeasible. Today, such a structure would cost many millions and be of questionable benefit.
A far better use of investment in the railway infrastructure would be the removal of pinch-points in the system, such as the restoration of double-track between Harrington and Parton and the conversion to double-track between Whitehaven, St Bees and Sellafield.
In addition, complete installation of continuous welded rail would improve the riding quality of the rolling stock, as well as reducing wear and tear. C A Potts, Chairman, Copeland Rail Users’ Group, Cumbria
