TOCs extend Advance on-the-day fares

Seven train operators are now selling Advance tickets up to ten minutes before departure time: Caledonian Sleeper, Grand Central, Greater Anglia, Northern, TransPennine Express, Virgin Trains East Coast and Virgin West Coast.

Until this move, Advance fares were generally only available up to midnight on the day before travel. CrossCountry pioneered the concept in 2015.

“Not everyone can plan journeys in advance, and now more people can buy cheaper tickets on the day, even on their way to the station,” said Rail Delivery Group Managing Director of Customer Experience Jacqueline Starr.

“We want customers to get the best possible deal whenever they travel. With 97% of your fare going back into running and improving the railway, investment is driving quicker improvement, more choice and greater freedom.”
