One-train-a-day West Lothian station faces closure
A 12-week consultation could result in the closure of Breich station on the Shotts line between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Network Rail launched the process on July 10, with views required from local rail users and the community.
Official footfall figures from 2015-16 recorded 138 passengers, an average of 2.6 per week. The unmanned station in West Lothian is served by one train a day in each direction, six days a week.
NR estimates it would save £1.4 million if the Scottish Government closed the station instead of modernising it.
The station, opened in 1869 on the Cleland and Midcalder Line, is on a route undergoing electrification. It is located between Addiewell and Fauldhouse, both of which have rail stations. The former is two miles away, the latter 2.9 miles. Breich also has bus services.
David Dickson, infrastructure director for the ScotRail Alliance, said: “The current and projected demand for rail services to and from Breich is very low. Closure of the station must be considered as an option. However, the views of the local community are vital when making a decision on its future.”
He added that ScotRail takes pride in the role it has played in growing Scotland’s Railway in recent years.
“Where there is proof of demand, such as the AirdrieBathgate route and along the Borders Railway, we have actively supported the opening of new stations and the reopening of old ones.
“As a responsible steward of the railway and a publicly run organisation, it is also Network Rail’s responsibility to ensure that we consider value for money in relation to the operation of station and rail services.”
