Hendrie recently crossed the England- Scotland border on a Class 350 Desiro, and it set him thinking.
“In the (good) old days of British Rail, or more specifically Inter- City, when you were on an Anglo-Scottish train either on the East or West Coast Main Line the guard (senior conductor) would make an announcement when the train crossed the Border.
“On a southbound train they would welcome you to England, and on a northbound train they would welcome you to Scotland.
“It no longer happens, which I think is a shame. I don’t think I’ve heard I since shortly after privatisation.
“Perhaps RAIL could start a campaign to bring it back (preferably before the day comes when they have an announcement telling us to have our passports at the ready!).”
