Extended busway?

-

Your article on the new Cambridge North station ( RAIL 828) gave me the idea of extending the guided busway to Huntingdon, thence on the open road to Bedford.

This service would connect with the western portion of the Oxbridge rail service (BedfordMilton Keynes-Oxford) once up and running.

In more detail, the bus would depart from Drummer Street bus station, after which it would call at Cambridge North and St Ives, followed by both bus and rail stations at Huntingdon.

The express bus would travel along the A1-A421 trunk roads to Bedford St Johns station, unloading its passengers and picking up those who have arrived off the train from Oxford. The bus would complete its journey at the bus station before making the return journey to Cambridge.

Meanwhile, those who alighted at St Johns would board the Oxford-bound train after its layover at Bedford’s main station.

I estimate travel time between Cambridge and Huntingdon would be approximately 30 minutes, and from the latter to Bedford around 45 minutes.

This would be an interim set-up until the whole of the Oxbridge route is up and running, which is who knows how many years away. Ronald Woodfield, Rugby
