DfT confirms construction of five new stations by 2020
Five new stations are to open by 2020, following confirmation of funding from the Department for Transport. The new stations (and levels of DfT funding) are:
Hordon Peterlee (County Durham): £4.4m from DfT; total cost £10.55m.
Warrington West (Cheshire): £4.23m from DfT; total cost £17.2m.
Reading Green Park: £2.3m from DfT; total cost £16.5m.
Bow Street (Ceredigion, Wales): £3.945m from DfT; total cost £6.76m.
Portway Parkway (Bristol): £1.67m from DfT; total cost £2.23m.
The money comes from the DfT’s New Stations Fund, and all five stations will have step-free access.
“We are committed to improving journeys for passengers right across the country. This means delivering more trains, quicker journeys and making more seats available,” said Rail Minister Paul Maynard.
“The New Stations Fund is a great example of how our record investment in the railways and work with local authorities and industry is delivering better journeys for passengers and boosting local economies.”
All five stations will be completed by March 2020, and aim to provide greater access to jobs or to reduce road congestion.
Network Rail Property Managing Director David Biggs said: “More people than ever are choosing to travel by train. This ambitious investment into brand new stations allows us to meet growing demand while providing greater connectivity across Britain.
“New stations are proven to have a hugely positive effect on local areas, acting as a catalyst for regeneration driving social and economic improvements.”
