LADBROKE GROVE, 1999
On October 5 1999, a ‘Thames Turbo’ left Paddington bound for Bedwyn. At Ladbroke Grove, its driver passed SN109 signal at danger before striking an incoming HST. Thirty-one people, including the driver, were killed. Hundreds more were injured. The unit was equipped with AWS. The accident may not have occurred had it - like the HST - been equipped with ATP as well.
